The MEMEing of Life: Think Like a Millionaire

Memes seem to be taking over our lives, with their positive messages and distilled life tips. But many see memes as trite and dismiss their power, assuming they are overly simplistic directives that don’t actually help at all.

In this series, I want to look at several memes that perfectly exhibit just how powerful these minimal, text-based images can be and why they should be used to help keep you on positive footing with forward momentum.

Think Like a Millionaire

The first meme we’re going to explore says, “Think like a millionaire, hustle like you’re broke.”

Now, let’s first acknowledge that memes can mean different things to different people. The message that resonates with me might not be the same message that resonates with you. But I do want to share with you why I find this meme so powerful. Often, as we go through life, we find ourselves accomplishing goals both big and small. These accomplishments can bring us to the pinnacle of our careers, make us CEOs of our own companies, and leave us standing on the financial summit we set out to climb. And while it’s a good idea to pat ourselves on the back for reaching these successes, we can’t let them stop us in our journey to greatness.

You have given your blood, sweat and tears to get to this point, and it’s going to take just as much effort to stay there. It can be easy to sit back and marvel at all that you’ve accomplished—to think of a hundred new ways to spend the extra income you’re earning. But slipping into this type of mindset is dangerous and can lead to your financial downfall. Everything you have worked so hard for can vanish in the blink of an eye if you are not strategic in your planning and mindful of your actions.  Studies have shown that successful millionaires tend to live below their means.    They refrain from spending money on frivolous purchases and instead tuck it away in savings or smart investments. This type of financial planning is a beneficial practice for everyone to use, not just those who are well off.

Not only can relaxing and celebrating your successes for too long cause you to squander the fortune you’ve built, but allowing this kind of mindset to take up space can also put an end to your hustle—and, as a result, an end to the things you accomplish.

So, go ahead, think like a millionaire. Enjoy the confidence and self-assurance that brings. See how it takes away certain fears and lets you take on risks you otherwise would have avoided. But continue to hustle with the urgency you had when you were broke so that your legacy doesn’t stop short of your potential.
