There are a lot of things that can seem like they’re keeping you from succeeding in life, such as a lack of education, a lack of talent and skill and growing up with insufficient means. Maybe those things do get in your way, but I’m here to tell you they can’t stop you from succeeding. In fact, there is only one thing that can: YOU! Yes, you are likely your own worst enemy.
Enemy Number One
I have a friend whose grown daughter keeps making excuses for her lack of parenting skills. “I’m just a bad mother,” she often says. And you know what? She is a bad mother, but not because she’s incapable of being a good one. Her incompetence is due solely to her inability to believe she can handle it. Odds are you’re doing the same thing in some area of your life.
Most people don’t realize that it’s their own action or inaction that sabotages their efforts for success. Do you believe you can and will succeed? Or do you expect to fail? If it’s the latter, you’re creating the perfect environment for failure.
“I never do that,” you may be telling yourself. Are you sure? Do you ever catch yourself saying things like, “I’m just too shy to be a manager.” Or, “I don’t have what it takes to run a business,” “I’m more of a doer than a leader,” “I can’t keep things straight because I have a horrible memory.” These are all negative messages you’re giving yourself and if you ever want to succeed, then they must stop.
Stopping the Negative Messages
Figure out what messages you’re sending yourself and then rewrite the script into something more positive. For example, if you often say, “I never have enough time to get anything done,” reframe your message to, “Today I’m going to write down what I need to get done so that I have a path to follow.” Give yourself messages of hope and confidence, not excuses and insults.
Keep telling yourself, “I CAN and I WILL.” It’s this type of positive message that your subconscious mind needs in order for you to believe in yourself. There are enough things in life that work against the attainment of dreams. Make a point right now not to allow yourself to be one of them.
