While most people have spent the beginning of their summer at the beach, with campfires, barbecues and fireworks, I have done all of those as well, except it is not exactly the same as it has been in years past. A little over a month ago I was diagnosed with Vertigo and it has changed things. Although there are far worse things in life, anyone who has experienced Vertigo knows the limitations and disruptions it can place on your life. While I have become accustomed to this new “norm,” I have found myself getting frustrated because I haven’t been feeling the greatest to do the things I want to do. While talking to a co-worker about my frustration with my inability to run daily (because that is when I experience some of my worst symptoms), he responded with something that got me thinking. Here’s what he said:
“Oh you don’t need to run. You’re already skinny.”
The misconception here is that I run to stay skinny. Although a lot of times those two go hand in hand (and I definitely am not complaining about the pounds I’ve shed since picking up running), I realized that I don’t run or workout to stay skinny. I run and workout so that I can stay HEALTHY. There is a huge difference between being “skinny” and being healthy.
I want to be healthy not for myself, but for my family. I want to see all the accomplishments that my friends and family will see in this lifetime. I want to see what my husband’s 87 year old grandfather has seen in his lifetime. I never want it to be my own fault for not seeing these things happen.
I cannot express enough how much a health scare can open your eyes to life! Get up and get moving. Start making smarter health decisions. Do not just do it for yourself! Do it for those you love, for those who want to see you live until you’re 100. So many poor decisions lead to unhealthy lifestyles. My main piece of advice is do not kill yourself or starve yourself trying to lose weight, but be conscious of what you are doing to your body. You never know what life is going to hand you, and you need to be your strongest and healthiest to fight those battles. Don’t do it for yourself, but do it for those who love you and support you, and never want to see something bad happen to you just because you didn’t take care of yourself the way you know you should!
Today I challenge you to find ONE way you can lead a healthier lifestyle. Build a vision board of all the people in your life who would be devastated if anything happened to you. Do it for yourself AND those people who want to experience all of life’s greatest blessings with you!
